Boeing recently doubled its commitment to sustainable jet fuel just six weeks after Washington became the third state in the nation to enact a clean fuel standard.
The aircraft manufacturer agreed to buy 5.6 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in 2023, the most it has ever purchased.
"We are demonstrating our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and catalyze the sustainable aviation fuel industry," said Sheila Reimes, Vice President of Environmental Sustainability at Boeing.
The company’s SAF purchase is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions, which cause climate change, pollute the air and harm the environment, by as much as 13,150 metric tons or more compared to traditional aviation fuel.
Boeing plans to use the sustainable jet fuel, equal to one quarter of its total jet fuel use in 2022, to power aircraft operating mostly out of Boeing Field in King County and a few other U.S. locations.
Produced from a wide range of renewable feedstocks, including used cooking oil and animal waste, sustainable aviation fuel is certified to be blended up to 50 percent with traditional carbon-based jet fuel for use in airplanes, engines and fueling stations without modification.
Under the Boeing deal, sustainable fuel producer Neste will provide 1.7 million gallons of SAF to be blended with traditional fossil -based jet fuel at a ratio of 30 percent to 70 percent.
Boeing first ventured into the sustainable aviation fuel business as far back as 2008, when it conducted the first test flights using the fuel.
In 2018, Boeing partnered with FedEx to fly the first test flight on 100% sustainable jet fuel. A year later, the aircraft manufacturer started offering customers the option of using sustainable aviation fuel for commercial delivery flights.
And in 2021, the company committed to delivering aircraft capable and certified to fly on 100% sustainable aviation fuel to the commercial market by 2030.
